Ovechkin 895

On Sunday April 6th, the Washington Capitals traveled to USB Arena to play the Islanders, with Ovechkin at 894 goals. The Islanders jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first period. The first period running out of time was no problem for Ovi. Just 26 seconds after Casey Cizikas tripped Rasmus Sandin, Alex Ovechkin scored Goal #895. Alex Ovechkin’s goal came 7:26 into the second period. The Islanders tacked on two more winning 4-1. 


Florida National Men’s Champions

The Men’s Final Four took place in San Antonio on Saturday April 5th and Monday April 7th. The national semifinals took place on April 5th, with two matchups (1) Florida vs (1) Auburn and (1) Duke vs (1) Houston. Florida beat Auburn in a back and forth battle 79-73. Duke held a 6 point lead with 1:14 to play but Houston had other plans ending on a 9-0 run beating Duke 70-67. The National Championship game was Houston vs Florida for all the marbles. Florida battled back down from multiple double-digit second-half deficits winning 65-63. Florida won their 3rd all-time national championship.


UConn National Women's Champions

Paige Beckers and the UConn Huskies capped a historic run beating South Carolina 82-59 in the championship. Throughout the tournament, the Huskies won all their games by a combined score of 521-324. The Huskies beat UCLA 85-51 in the semifinals. South Carolina cruised past Texas by a score of 74-57 in the semifinals. UConn won their 12th national championship all-time and 1st since 2016.


Frozen Four

The Frozen Four semifinals took place on Friday, April 10th. The two matchups were Denver vs Western Michigan and Boston University vs Penn State. Defending Champions Denver and newcomer Western Michigan had the first game of the day. Western Michigan scored two goals in the 2nd period taking a 2-0 lead into the 2nd intermission. However, it was not enough to win in regulation. Denver scored two goals in the 3rd period forcing overtime. No one was able to score in the first extra period, but 00:26 into the second OT Western Michigan scored, winning 3-2.  The second game was Blue Blood BU vs newcomer Penn State. In the second period BU got going scoring two goals and never looked back winning 3-1 over Penn State.

Way too Early Playoff Look

Sure we still have 5-1/2 months until October baseball, but it is never too early to look at the playoff picture. In the AL The Texas Rangers lead the conference 9-5, the Tigers and Angels are at 8-5, the Blue Jays are at 8-6, and The Yankees and Guardians are at 7-6. The NL has the Padres at 1st with an 11-3 record, the Giants 2nd at 10-3, the Dodgers 3rd at 11-4, the Mets 4th at 9-4, Phillies 5th at 8-5, and the Brewers 6th at 8-6.
