MLS Cup
The MLS season is over and a champion has been crowned! Inter Miami and Lionel Messi earned a thrilling win versus the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS Cup. The season started in late Febuary and the eventual champs did not lose until late April. Miami finished 3rd in the MLS Eastern Conference (they lost the second place tie breaker to FC Cincinnati). Miami was one point behind the East’s first place team, Philadelphia. Philly finished with 66 points and Miami finished with 65. Miami’s first playoff game was home versus Nashville. Miami won the three-game series against Nashville 2-1. Miami then went on the road and shutout Cincinnati 4-0. They traveled back home to face New York City FC. NYCFC lost to Miami 5-1 in resounding fashion. After struggling early and conceding an own goal, Vancouver tied the game at 1-1 in the second half. Messi though had other plans. The Argentinian star assisted on the game-winning goal by Rodrigo De Paul, with a beautiful forward volley. Inter Miami defeated Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 to capture their first ever MLS Cup championship.
Upset of #1
If you read the headline and thought this was about Indiana upsetting Ohio State in football, you would be incorrect. The #1 team in Men’s Basketball was upset in blowout fashion. #10 Iowa State Cyclones had their way with #1 Purdue Boilermakers, winning 81-58. Iowa State held all Purdue players to 11 points or less and the Boilermakers shot only 22% from outside the arc. Purdue had three more turnovers than Iowa State. Iowa State became 9-0 on the season, with Purdue dropping to 8-1. It’s the largest home-loss in the AP Poll-era for a #1 team.
