Conference Championship Friday Results
American Conference Championship
Tulane Green Wave vs. North Texas Mean Green
The American Championship between the Green Wave and Mean Green had a playoff spot on the line. Tulane made their fourth consecutive appearance in the AAC Championship. The Green Wave went 1-2 in the previous three years. Early on in this one, Drew Mestemaker and Tre Williams III connected in the end zone to give North Texas a 7-0 lead. But that lead would not last long, as Tulane scored 31 straight points to take a 31-7 lead. The Mean Green scored two TDs to make the score 31-21. Tulane knocked in one final field goal to win 34-21. North Texas had five turnovers (Tulane had zero). With that result, Tulane won the AAC Championship and scored a playoff bid.
Sun Belt Championship
Troy Trojans vs. James Madison Dukes
Troy managed to keep up with heavily favored James Madison for three quarters. But once the fourth quarter started, there was no stopping JMU. The Dukes turned a 17-14 lead into a 31-14 win versus their conference foe from Troy, Alabama. James Madison needs help from the Duke Blue Devils if they want to make the playoffs.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Can you get better after winning a championship? The defending NBA champs seem to think so. The Oklahoma City Thunder won last year’s championship and are now 22-1 to start the new season. For reference, the best ever regular season was the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls who finished 72-10. This year’s Thunder are on pace to finish at 78-4. The only loss for OKC this season was a 121-119 defeat versus the Portland Trail Blazers a month ago. Though the Thunder definitely have the hard part of their schedule later in the season, there is no doubt they are a good team.
