Last Week’s Results:

Oregon Ducks 42-27 USC Trojans:

The Ducks outlasted the Trojans in Eugene. Oregon played a great game, never letting USC catch their footing. The scoring began when Jayden Maiava found Makai Lemon in the end zone. Oregon followed that with two touchdowns of their own to make it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. Makai Lemon got another touchdown as he tossed it to fellow wide receiver Tanook Hines to even the score. Oregon got a punt return touchdown to go back up. The Ducks again scored to make it 28-14 at halftime. Makai Lemon got another touchdown from Jayden Maiava to cut Oregon’s lead in half. The Ducks and Trojans traded TDs, but USC missed the two-point conversion. Oregon scored one more touchdown to ice the game. The Ducks walked out with a 42-27 win. Oregon seemed to lock up a playoff spot after beating USC. The Ducks are 10-1 with only Washington remaining on the schedule. USC had their playoff hopes shattered and now hope to make a good bowl game.

This Week’s Games:

#1 Ohio State Buckeyes vs. #17 Michigan Wolverines:

The Game is the matchup played between Ohio State and Michigan every year on rivalry weekend. Why do these teams hate each other so much? Aside from it being a matchup of the two state’s top schools, apparently the dislike between the sides is seeded in a geographical dispute over Toledo. True story! Toledo!

Anyway, the Wolverines have won four straight editions of this matchup, including last year’s surprising upset. Ohio State has playoff seeding and Big 10 title game implications. Michigan is trying to catapult themselves into the playoffs. This game usually has those kinds of implications.

#14 Miami Hurricanes vs. #18 Pittsburgh Panthers:

The ACC is going to be a one-bid league for this year’s playoffs. This game between the Canes and Panthers is huge for determining who will make it to the ACC title game. Miami is 9-2 and Pitt is 8-3. Both teams hope to win and boost their playoff argument.

#12 Vanderbilt Commodores vs. #19 Tennessee Volunteers:

Vanderbilt and Tennessee are battling in their rivalry this week. While this game has no SEC title game effect, Vanderbilt hopes to catapult themselves into the playoffs. Tennessee is hoping to spoil their rivals season and get into a good bowl game. With a win, Vanderbilt would have their first ten-win season in program history.

NHL: Surging Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning have the NHL’s longest active win streak at six games. The Lightnng’s last loss was devastating, as they held a 2-0 lead but allowed six straight goals, five of them in the final period, to Vancouver, losing 6-2. Tampa Bay’s win streak started on November 18th when they beat the New Jersey Devils with help from Jake Guentzel’s hat trick. Guentzel scored the OT winner in the following match versus the Edmonton Oilers. The Lightning had four first period goals in a 5-3 victory over the Washington Capitals. In the win over Washington, Tampa Bay scored both a shorthanded and a power play goal. The Lightning then shutout the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0. Andrei Vasilevskiy had 32 saves in Tampa’s 5-1 win versus the Calgary Flames. The Lightning’s sixth consecutive win was a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Tampa’s next matchup is today at 2:00pm vs the New York Rangers.

NBA MVP Race

The NBA MVP race is heating up to be one for the ages. Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Luka Doncic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are all off to great starts. Only time will tell if they continue and who wins MVP. Nikola Jokic, who won three MVPs and two runner ups in the last 5 years, is off to the best start of his career. Giannis and SGA are close behind, as all three are on pace to break Jokic’s PER (Player Efficiency Rating) record. Those three all rank in the top four in true shooting percentage by any player who averaged more than 30 points per game in a season. The NBA’s only ever unanimous, Steph Curry (2015), is the only other player who is top four in that category. Jokic’s last three seasons are three of the best five ever in recent memory. Jokic averages 29.6 points per game, 12.8 rebounds per game, and 11.1 assists per game.

While Jokic is pacing the league with his record-breaking numbers, other players are not far off. The top four players this season have had some of the best starts of anyone in the last 40 years. Antetokounmpo is averaging a 30/10/6 slash line. It would be his third consecutive season having those numbers. Wilt Chamberlin and Russel Westbrook are the only other players to average that, other than Jokic this year.

Luka Doncic leads the NBA in scoring with 34.5 ppg. Shai is one of the best players in the league and led his Thunder to a 17-1 start. Though these players will probably decline, this race could be great, as it could have: a three-time MVP who leads the league in rebounds and assists, a one-time MVP who leads his team to a record breaking season, a two-time MVP who is having a better season than his other MVP years, and a player who averages a 35-point triple double. Sounds fun and interesting– can’t wait to see what happens!
