Today’s Matchups:
This game has huge implications for the Big 12 title race. Currently the BYU Cougars and Texas Tech Red Raiders are 1 & 2 in the conference. The Red Raiders are 5-1 in the Big 12. The Cougars are 5-0 in the Big 12. Since the game takes place in Lubbock, Texas Tech is the opening favorite. If the Red Raiders win, they would be in a great position at first in the conference with only West Virginia and UCF left (West Virginia and UCF have a combined 2 conference wins). If the Cougars are able to pull it out, their road will be rockier. They would then play TCU (3-2 in the conference). If they manage to beat TCU, waiting for them the next Saturday is another road trip to a potential Big 12 title contender in Cincinnati. Then they finish with UCF.
The undefeated Texas A&M Aggies and the ranked Missouri Tigers face each other in Columbia, MO. Texas A&M is favored and almost every game is important for the Aggies. Alabama is tied for first in the conference with Texas A&M. Georgia & Ole Miss are half a game back of them, and Texas is one game behind them! After Mizzou, the Aggies face South Carolina, followed by Samford, then Texas. Missouri needs a win if they want to stay in the playoff hunt. After Texas A&M, the Tigers have Mississipi State, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
The Oregon Ducks and Iowa Hawkeyes face each other this week. This marks the beginning of a tough stretch to end the season for the Ducks. Following Iowa, Oregon faces Minnesota, USC, and Washington. Iowa has USC, Michigan State, and Nebraska to close out the season. Oregon is still very much alive in the College Football Playoff race but can ill afford another loss. Iowa is playing as a ranked team for the first time this season. Oregon is the favorite, but it’s always a tough, competitive matchup when traveling to Iowa City.
World Series Game 7
The World Series ended last Sunday morning (Eastern time zone) and/or Saturday night (Other US timezones). It was a great game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays. The scoring started with a Bo Bichette three-run homerun in the third inning. The Dodgers responded with sacrifice flies in the forth and sixth innings. Andres Gimenez added an RBI double for the Jays to make it 4-2. The Dodgers responded again with a Max Muncy homerun in the eighth and a Miguel Rojas homerun in the ninth to send it to extras. Both teams got throw out force plays at home plate during the lae stretch of the game. In the 11th inning, Will Smith hit a homerun to make it 5-4 for the Dodgers’ first lead of the game. After pitching as the starter the night before, Yoshinobu Yamamoto came on in relief. He and the defense held on and ended the World Series with a double play. The Dodgers became the first repeat champs since the New York Yankees in 1998-2000 and the first National League repear champions since the Cincinnati Reds of 1975-76. Yoshinobu Yamamoto won World Series MVP. He pitched 17.2 innings and allowed 2 earned runs and had 15 strikeouts in three appearances in the World Series (starting in Games 2 & 6 and relief in Game 7). Clayton Kershaw retired a champion. Will Smith, who had the championship winning homerun, caught a World Series record 73 innings. He was behind the plate for every Dodgers pitch.
53 point quarter
The Miami Heat set a team record with a 53-point first quarter enroute to a 126-108 win versus the Charlotte Hornets. The Heat followed that up with a 19-point second quarter. Charlotte had a 27-2 run in the second, making it 66-65(Miami still led) but the Heat ultimately pulled away.
