Marshall Plane Crash Anniversary
November marks the 55th anniversary of one of the saddest stories in college football. On November 14, 1970, as the Marshall Thundering Herd football team was flying home from their game that week, their Southern Airways Flight 932 was set to land at the Tri State Airport in West Virginia. The plane crashed short of the runway killing, everyone on board, which included 37 Marshall University football players, five coaches, seven staff members, 21 boosters, two pilots, two flight attendants, and a charter coordinator. Marshall was coming off of a 17-14 loss to East Carolina. On St. Patricks Day in, 1971 Jack Lengyel was named Marshall’s next head coach. The NCCA granted Marshall permission to use freshman on their varsity squad that season– something that was not allowed at the time. Marshall finished the 1971 season with only two wins. But by keeping the team going, it kept the spirits of the fallen Thundering Herd players and coaches alive. Though it would take a long time, Marshall would rebuild into a strong and relevant program, featuring all-time great players like QB Chad Pennington and WR Randy Moss.
