Trade, Release, Retire
There were some big NFL moves this past week. The Raiders got Geno Smith for a 3rd round pick from the Seahawks. That trade reunited Smith and his former coach Pete Caroll. This past week Jonathan Allen, Gus Edwards, and Harold Landry, were all released. Another notable trade included the Bears getting Joe Thuney from the Chiefs for a 4th round pick.
Outside Hockey
On Saturday March 1st, in the NHL Stadium Series, the Blue Jackets and Red Wings played in Ohio Stadium. Despite a below freezing temperature, 94,751 fans attended and I can tell you first hand, it was a great game. The teams took the first period to adjust playing outside and no goals were scored. In the second period, the show got started as Denton Matechuyk scored making it 1-0 Columbus. The Red Wings responded soon after with a goal of their own by Alex DeBrincat. Columbus then took the lead back with a Dimitri Voronkov goal. 32 seconds later Matheiu Olivier scored, extending Columbus’s lead to 2. At the end of the 2nd period it was 3-1 Columbus. When the 3rd started Detroit showed everyone that they were not done. Patrick Kane found the back of the net at 3:34 to make it 3-2 Columbus. The clock kept ticking. With only 3:24 to play Detroit tied it Alex DeBrincat scored his second of the night. The Score was CBJ-3 DET-3. Just over a minute later a Justin Danforth goal gave Columbus the lead back. With a minute and a half to play, Detroit pulled their goalie. Columbus missed a few empty net chances but finally scored, ending the game with a score of CBJ-5 DET-3. The Star of the game was Columbus goalie Elvis Merzlinkis he stopped 43 shots from Detroit. The Red Wings out shot the Blue Jackets 46-21 shots on goal, but could not pick up a win.
