MLB Playoffs
The MLB playoffs are underway. We are past the Wild Card series, and the Divisional round starts today. The playoffs started on Tuesday with four matchups– the first of which was Philadelphia Phillies at the Atlanta Braves. The Braves pulled out the 5-3 win with an Austin Riley three-run shot in the eighth inning. Later that day, the Chicago White Sox met up with the Houston Astros. Chicago jumped out to a 5-0 lead, and never looked back, winning 6-3 to open up their postseason run. After that, we got back-to-back beatdowns. The first one was between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Yankees soon-to-be CY Young winning pitcher Cam Schlittler allowed only two hits in 6.1 innings and struck out ten Red Sox. Breakout star Ben Rice had two home runs, one of them a grand slam. The Yankees walked out of Game 1 with a 9-0 win. The night-capper saw the San Diego Padres face the Chicago Cubs. Padres pitcher Michael King took a no-hit bid into the seventh until Nico Hoerner broke it up. The Padres bats were on fire, as they launched three home runs in this 8-0 win.
The next day was more of the same– at least for a few teams. The Yankees and White Sox each got blowout wins to punch their tickets to the divisional round. Luis Garcia Jr. and Cody Bellinger combined for five hits in the Yankees 9-2 win. Chase Meidroth’s sixth inning three-run home run was the icing on the cake in the 7-3 Chicago White Sox victory. The Padres secured a 4-1 win over the Cubs to advance to the divisional round. Meanwhile, in Atlanta, the Phillies had made it a series. Philadelphia clawed their way back from a 3-1 deficit to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Alec Bohm hit a solo home run, then the Phillies won the game on a successful ABS challenge in the bottom half of the tenth.
That meant that the Phillies and Braves were going to play a win-or-go-home match the next day. Atlanta jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a first inning home run and never trailed in the 6-2 victory.
So with that, the Divisional round is set and kicks off today. At 1:00pm the White Sox visit division-rival Cleveland Guardians. The Yankees face their division rivals, the Tampa Bay Rays, at 6:30pm. The Los Angeles Dodgers start their quest for a three-peat with the Atlanta Braves today at 4:00pm. Then, the final game of the night is the Padres versus the MLB’s best Milwaukee Brewers at 8:30pm.

College Football
The College Football season keeps on going. So what happened in Week 4? What is coming up in Week 5?
Last week saw the #1 Texas Longhorns barely survive against the then undefeated #14 Tennessee Volunteers. Tennessee scored a touchdown with 1:22 left in the game to cut the Longhorns lead to 20-17. They then recovered a fumble on the onside kick. However, the last second hail mary attempt was swatted down in the end zone, and Texas escaped with a victory.
The #21 Florida Gators hosted the #4 Ole Miss Rebels, and they put on a show for the crowd in Gainesville. The Gators jumped out to a 17-6 halftime lead, and never looked back. They did whatever they wanted against that Ole Miss team, winning 52-28. Florida running back Jadan Baugh rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns.
A big game out west featured the #20 Oregon Ducks and the #12 USC Trojans. Oregon’s QB Dante Moore got injured early in the game, which forced backup Dylan Raiola to come in. Raiola played like he should have been in the whole time. He went 19 for 25 for 289 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the 41-27 Ducks victory.
The Louisville Cardinals and Penn State Nittany Lions both got upset by unranked squads. Mississippi State’s star QB, Kamario Taylor, led the surprisingly good Bulldogs to a 31-24 win over the Missouri Tigers. But the big story was out of Ann Arbor, where the Michigan Wolverines were in control of their game for 59 minutes and 59 seconds. However, as time expired, the Iowa Hawkeyes weren’t done. Iowa QB Hank Brown spiraled the ball towards the front corner of the end zone as time expired with the Hawkeyes trailing 19-14. The ball hit the hands of receiver Reece Vander Zee, who secured the catch and got a foot in to seal the 20-19 upset victory.
