Notre Dame Women Loses 2 Straight

On Sunday Feb.23, the #1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish were on a 19-game win streak, had a showdown with #13 NC State. The Irish, who were 24-2 overall, 15-0 in the ACC, and 7-1 vs ranked teams, were expected to win on the road, but NC State had other plans. It was back and forth all of regulation. The Wolfpack held a 4-point advantage at the half. But Notre Dame played great ball, tying it up and sending the game to OT on a last-second 3 from Sonia Citron. The Irish and Wolfpack battled in the tight game and were tied at the end of the first Overtime 92-92. In the second overtime though, the story changed. The Wolfpack outscored the Fighting Irish 12-3, picking up a 104-95 win. That handed the Irish their first conference loss and third overall loss. NC State was led by Sophomore Zoe Brooks who scored 33 points and had 10 rebounds. Notre Dame could not do it, even though Hidalgo, Miles, and Citron all had 22+ points. 

Notre Dame’s next game was at home vs 24 Florida St. Notre Dame quickly started with no troubles and in the 2nd quarter was up by 15 points by a score of 29-14. But less than 5 minutes later and after a 18-3 run, FSU had tied it at 32 apiece. FSU then took a lead and held it until late in the 3rd. With 4:22 remaining in the 3rd, Notre Dame took a one-point lead and the score stood ND-53 FSU-52. But after that, it was all Florida State. They took a 10-point lead with 0:32 left in the 3rd. The score was 67-57 Florida State leading, and they never looked back, picking up the win 86-81. FSU was led by Makayla Tomphson who had 22 points and 17 rebounds.


NBA Highlights

Nikola Jokic had a career high 19 assists in the Nuggets 125-116 win over the Pacers. 

Steph Curry had 56 points and 12 threes in the Warriors Thursday night win over the Magic. 

The 76ers said Friday Joel Embiid will miss the remainder of the regular season as his left knee had increased swelling after the 76ers Saturday game vs the Nets. Embiid last season only played 39 games but was part of the 76ers postseason run. Over the summer, he won a gold medal with Team USA. Embiid has tried to be available as much as he can this year but he will be out for the remainder of the season.

T-Wolves star Anthony Edwards was suspended for 1 game, after picking up 2 technical fouls vs the Lakers. He was ejected in the 3rd quarter after his 2nd technical foul of the day. He had 16 technical fouls on the season and faced a 1 game suspension. he sat out on Friday as the Timberwolves faced the Jazz.


Matthew Stafford back in LA

The Rams and QB Matthew Stafford agreed to a restructured deal on Friday, keeping the QB in LA. Stafford last year also reworked his contract. Stafford agreed to stay in LA after talking with the Giants and Raiders. Sean McVay, the Rams head coach, said earlier this week that the team’s first goal was to keep Stafford. In 16 games last year, Stafford had 3,762 pass yards, 20 TD’s, and 8 Interceptions. Stafford is currently 191 yards away from 60,000 career passing yards, a mark reached by only nine other QB’s.

This week in Men’s College Basketball nine ranked teams lost to unranked teams. On Saturday, Oregon (19-8) beat #11 Wisconsin (21-5) 77-73 in OT. Arkansas (15-11) beat #15 Missouri (20-6) 92-85. BYU (18-8) beat #19 Arizona (18-8) 96-95. Oklahoma (16-10) beat #21 Mississippi St (19-7) 93-87. Vanderbilt (17-9) beat #24 Ole Miss (19-7) 77-72. On Sunday, Indiana (15-11) beat #13 Purdue (19-8) 73-58. On Tuesday, Georgia (16-11) beat #3 Florida (24-3) 88-83. Oklahoma St (13-14) beat #9 Iowa St (21-6) 74-68. On Wednesday, Vanderbilt (18-9) beat #12 Texas A&M (20-7) 86-84.

Copa del Rey Semifinals Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid

In the 1st leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, the final score was 4-4. In the 1st minute Atletico scored on a Julian Alvarez goal. Then, Atletico scored again in the 6th minute with Antoine Greizmann giving Atletico Madrid a 2-0 lead. But Javi Galan of Atletico Madrid got a yellow card in the 16th minute. Then, in the 19th minute, Barcelona responded. Pedri scored to make it 2-1. And in the 21st minute Barcelona scored again. This time it was Pau Cubarsi. Barcelona had made it even at 2 but they were not done because in the 41st minute, Inigo Martinez scored giving Barcelona their first lead of the game at 3-2. Five minutes were added to the 1st half. The score at halftime was Barcelona-3 Atletico Madrid-2. The second half started with no goals for a while. In the 55th minute Atletico Madrid made two substitutions. Samuel Lino came in for Giuliano Simeone and Reinildo replaced Javi Galan. In the 60th minute Atletico Madrid made another sub- Nahuel Molina came in for Conor Gallagher. In the 68th minute both teams made two subs each. For Atletico Madrid, Alexander Sorloth and Angel Correra came in for Antoine Griezman and Rodrigo De Paul. And for Barcelona, Robert Lewandowski and Gavi replaced Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo. In the 74th minute Robert Lewandowski scored making it Barcelona-4 Atletico Madrid-2. It looked like Barcelona would win, especially after Atletico player Jose Maria Gimenez had a yellow card shown. But, in the 84th minute Atletico scored. Marcos Llorente made it 4-3 Barcelona. All seemed hopeless for Atletico Madrid after they got a yellow card in the 88th minute from player Pablo Barrios. Then they announced 4 minutes of stoppage time. From there it got worse. Another yellow for Atletico Madrid– this time it was Alexander Sorloth. Then in the 90+3 minute, Atletico Madrid got the equalizer by Alexander Sorloth. The game ended in 90+6. The final score was Barcelona-4 Atletico Madrid-4 FT.
